Biographie
Le Nonet à Nootens is a Belgian jazz band led by composer & arranger Alexis Nootens. The group, composed of six horns (trumpet, trombone, clarinet & three saxes) is tied together by the rhythm section (guitar, double bass & drums) and play only original songs composed by their leader.
The repertoire is deeply grounded into the big band tradition from the 1950-60s but with a modern touch brought by the mix of different genres such as rumba, gospel and the blues. The repertoire is therefore eclectic and explores the possibilities offered by the large ensemble by blending different instruments such as clarinet, flute & saxophones with brass mutes.
Each soloist has their blazing moment, leading toward epic sax battles or profound groove led by the warm sound of the bass clarinet. To sum, the band sounds like a tiny big band playing only original composition with eclectic influence.
