Callaz

Biographie

Callaz is the artistic moniker of Maria Soromenho. Being a self-taught artist, she gives her own language the background noise of her autonomy, resulting in two EPs and two LPs, composed and produced in multiple places in Europe and the US. She has taken the stage in as many cities as the ones that are part of her affective geography and the history of each of her works.

Callaz's first EP, 2017's Beer, Dog Shit & Chanel N°5, a collection of 5 tracks produced by Filipe Paes, was noted for its seemingly sunny scenario where peaks of anxiety, gloomy memories and stormy sensations sometimes broke through, all under a retro filter.

A year after her debut, Callaz released her second EP, Gaslight, produced by Primeira Dama and Chinaskee, in which her initial work's ambitions were fully realised. After performing live more and more, Callaz's continuous exploration of experimental pop à” as well as echoes of Nico's melancholy à” have come to bear on to make her debut album a more cohesive work.

In this landscape she releases her self-titled debut LP (Callaz, 2020). Produced in Lisbon by Adriano Cintra, it collects ten tracks in a captivating and imaginative fusion of electronic pop and indie rock. At times vulnerable and playful, are a beguiling and imaginative fusion of electronic pop and indie rock featuring Callaz's unique aesthetic sense and incisive refrains heard in the dancing darkness that her listeners have grown accustomed to.

In her second LP, Dead Flowers & Cat Piss (2021), she follows the spectrum that connects the electronic pop of the dancefloor to the contemplative sounds of the hours composing alone in her room. Produced by Helena Fagundes, in a spontaneous collaboration during the pandemic, the work groups ten tracks that reveal the desire to experiment, not only with rhythm and melody, but also with new formulas for her creative process.

Produced by the artist Ah! Kosmos, Queima Essa Ideia (2020), Living in a Garage (2021) and Galaazar (2022) are the titles of the Singles she composed during her time in Berlin as a prelude of her intentions to take on new ideas on her live performance. No Lying, Biting (2022) was also produced in Berlin by RUSNAM.

Callaz's process in writing and composing Am-dram (2022) carries the artist's own experiences during the summer of 2022 spent in Antwerp. With a music video directed by Guilherme Valente, Am-dram is an electronic composition, lo-fi and intense as the title suggests: "Amateur Dramatic".

Callaz has played live in Lisbon, Los Angeles, Malmö, Reykjavík, Berlin, Madrid, Brussels and toured New York City performing in venues such as The Bowery Electric and Rockwood Music Hall.
